The 1959-60 swimming season was the most successful in the history of the water sport here at West Islip. This was accomplished by three years of hard work, determination and skill, on the part of the West Islip Mariners. Records were broken, undefeated teams were defeated, and former champions were dethroned. The over-all record for the year was 13 wins, 2 defeats and 1 tie. In Nassau-Suffolk league competition the Blue and Gold were undefeated. This was climaxed by the winning of The Long Island Swimming and Diving Championships.
Outstanding were the performances of George Vehstedt and Ken Campo, undefeated all season; Craig Reubens - 400 and 200 yard freestyle champion; Bill Chalich - backstroke champion; Norman Horan and Al Geyer in the breaststroke; Vincent Kublin in the butterfly; the speedy performance of Pete Raynor in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events; and Captain Ray Campo in the individual medley.
The fast freestyle relay of Bert Schwartz, Bob Lehrfeld, Jay Losee and Dave Bradley posted the fast time of 1:43:3 against Poly Prep.
The medley relay of Bill Chalich, Vincent Kublin, Norman Horan andTommy David posted the fastest time in the championships.
This great team was well supported by the swimming of Dick Berman, Chuck Reimer, Bob Schumacher and Dan Zawyrucha.
Bob Matherson, team manager, greatly assisted Coach Brown in keeping detailed records of the Lion Speedsters.
Next year, West Islip will lose the services of Captain Ray Campo, Pete Raynor, Craig Reubens, Jay Losee, Dave Bradley, Rod Rose, Al Geyer, Tom David and Bert Schwartz.

Bottom Row L to R: Pat Gravesen, Irma Haggerty, JoAnn Haggerty, Edie Noble, Kathy Graham, Barrie Lowell

For the third consecutive year, the Girls' Swimming Team won the won the championship at the meet with Brentwood and Uniondale. This feat was anticipated as the team had won the two previous meets with Brentwood. Uniondale had been defeated once and tied once by West Islip's accomplished swimmers.
Hard work and spirited determination under Miss Virginia Wunsch's competent supervision plus the interest and advice of Miss Doris Metrelis were responsible for the team's success.
To close a rewarding season, a team dinner was held in the school cafeteria at which Coach Brown spoke about the aspects of swimming as a career.

Football

Top Row L to R: Robert Jones, Robert Schwartz, Peter Raynor, Briant Notine, George Botz, Albert Pfaffe, Richard Berman, Albert Geyer
Middle Row L to R: Coach Cesareo, William Elasik, Charles Baumgartner, Patrick Estelle, Peter Rhein, William Miller, Charles Rigano, Richard Kriete, Frank Wielbacker, Coach Martinell
Bottom Row L to R: William Boyd, Harry Selg, Sam Benigno, Robert Roy, John Horton, Joseph Quinn

The jump to League I competition proved too strong for the spirited Lions as they compiled a 3 win 2 loss record. In two non-league games, West Islip lost one and tied one.
The Lions fought for and won the first League game with Brentwood; however, our second encounter was with Port Jefferson whose powerful machine proved to us that it was superior. Although we won our third League game, our opponent, Northport, certainly pushed us around. When the next game was played with South Huntington this team definitely caught us napping. A win over Lindenhurst renewed our morale, which slid back when we lost the last League game to Huntington.
The two non-league games record a loss to Bay Shore in a fumble recovery in the last minutes of play, and a tie with West Babylon.

Field Hockey

Standing L to R: Coach Roberta Young, Judy Becker, Leona Madsen, Diane Davis, Pat Frank, Gail Wagner, Joanne Vogelsang, Marcia Root
Sitting Middle Row: Amanda Mahler, Linda Wicks, Elizabeth Hawkins, Pat Clausey
Sitting Bottom Row: Louella Thompson, Josephine Mannino, Toni De Luca, Phyllis Kroll

The hockey team enjoyed an undefeated season until playday at Port Jefferson where they lost one game, tied one and won one. The teamwork was excellent with an exceptionally strong defense. The outstanding player was Marcia Root.

Soccer

Standing L to R: Coach Zawyrucha, Thomas David, John Loureiro, Stephen Gabriel, Hans Somers, Geoffrey Matherson, George Wells, Larry O'Connell, Warren Bjumark, Robert DeSano
Sitting: Robert Mattherson, Raymond Lanning, Archie Bahruth, Frank Perrini, John DiIorio, Bill Raynor, John Bartlet, Thor Thodal, Tom DiNonno, Joseph Moser, John Copeland

The 1959 Varsity Soccer Team enjoyed a successful season with an overall record of 8 wins and 5 losses. In League Two competition, the Lions placed second with a 7 win - 3 loss record.      To offset the loss of six graduated lettermen, Coach Zawyrucha and the boys worked feverishly to get the team in shape for our first league encounter with Amityville. Our victory over Amityville was hard won in a very close game 4-3. The next game we dropped to Bay Shore 3-1. However, after that defeat we went on to win 5 league matches in a row; Copiague, West Babylon, Northport, Sayville, and South Huntington went down before the West Islip Booters.
The Brentwood game was the season's climax as a victory over the strong Brentwood team would tie the Lions for the league championship. A large crowd assembled at the Brentwood field to witness the battle for the championship. The game was well-played as well as hard fought, but the Brentwood Booters were too fast for the Lions. The final score stood Brentwood-5, West Islip-2.

Track

Standing L to R: Bob Lowell, Peter Abolins, John Dart, Al Geyer, Frank Balajadia, Tony Catlender, Bob McCallum, Gus Horan, Angel Julian, Bill Miller, Eddie Squire, Joe Quinn, Bert Schwartz, Coach Cesareo, Coach Dwyer
Kneeling: Vincent Mannino, Al Snyder, Wayne Nielsen, John Ferry, Dick Lewis, John Factora, Bob Millen, Al Bohlert

Capturing third place in the county proved the prowess of the spike shoe brigade. New school records were set in each event except the broad jump and the high jump. Outstanding were the following performances: Bob Millen's mile 4:30; Wayne Nielsen's 2:07 half mile; John Factora's hurdling and sprinting; Al Snyder's 220 yard run: 23.9; Al Bohlert's shot-put: 50'3", disc 148; Frank Balajadia's 440 yards: 53.5 and sprinting; Al Bohlert's new hurdle records and Ed Squire's mile was close behind Bob Millen's. In the A2 League, West Islip captured fifth place, and in the A Meet, fourth place.

Cross Country

The Cross Country Team had a disappointing season because of a poor turn out. With only six boys on Varsity and no Jayvee team, the barriers were at a decided disadvantage running against schools with varsity teams of twenty or more members. The lone victory was scored against Brentwood, the only school having a team similar in numbers. With the savvy attained this year and hopes for a larger team enrollment in the Fall, Coach Dwyer can look forward to a more eventful season in 1960.

Softball

Standing L to R: Coach Miss Desch, Pat Clausey, Barrie Lowell, Connie Myott, Joanne Vogelsang, Maureen Price, Coach Miss Wagner
Kneeling: Diane Davis, Kathy Graham, Gerry Garrison, Josephine Mannino
Sitting: Lou Fariello, Margaret Engel, Janice Heikkila

The very muddy seven inning game played in abundant rain at Port Jefferson will always be remembered by those girls who played softball for West Islip in the Spring of 1959. Miss Wagner and the team shared another enjoyable experience at Heckscher State Park where the team won two of its three playday games. Marcia Root was chosen as the Most Valuable Player.

Baseball

Top Row L to R: John Horton, Ed Lehr, Richard Hamma, Warren Halverson,
Tom Kutkiewicz, Bill Raynor, Coach Rudolf
Bottom Row: Tom O'Connor, Joe Loureiro, Bob Desano, Mike Noto, Sam Benigno, Cosmo Maturo

With fine hitting and pitching to spark the team, the 1959 Varsity Baseball Team enjoyed an over-all record of 8-7. Consistantly fine performances were turned in by Sam Benigno, John Louriero, Tom O'Connor, Cosmo Maturo, Tom Kutkiewicz, and Bob Desano; however, it was Halverson's show all the way. Warren came up with the most brilliant pitching performance of his high school career in a no hit - no run game against Babylon. In the game against West Babylon he pitched a two hit shutout. Captain Halverson received the Sideliners Trophy, The Most Valuable Player Award and was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies to play in a rookie league at Johnson City where he performed so well that he advanced to Class A ball.

Wrestling

Top Row L to R: Bob Happe, Gene Rubow, Vincent Mannino, Joe Quinn, Bob Jensen, Don Barichak, John Canfora, Pete Khein
Middle Row: Angel Julian, Briant Notine, Tad Parvin, John Berman, Bob Salth, Bob Desano
Bottom Row: John McCabe, Ray McCabe, Tony Mellino, Bob Factora, Walt Schemel, Al Caralieri

Throughout the entire season, the wrestling team displayed typical West Islip spirit and skill. Its record of eleven wins and nine losses is a good one in lieu of the inexperience on the part of many of the boys. Sixty-five lads turned out for Varsity and Junior Varsity wrestling, some of them for the first time. However, as the season wore on, many of these boys became first-rate grapplers. The top men on the team during the regular season were: Briant Notine, beaten only once and Bob Factora, beaten twice.
In the A-1 League Tournament, the Lions came in seventh. It is interesting to note that many of the deciding matches were very close and could have gone either way. Briant Notine and Bob Factora finished second in the Tournament Meet. In the Suffolk County Tournament, West Islip fared better when the team placed seventh out of twenty-four competing schools. Briant Notine won his class and Bob Factora finished third.
Congratulations are due Coaches Duart and Holborow who again expertly and enthusiastically guided another successful wrestling team.

Girls Volleyball

Left Back to Front: Connie Myott, Cecelia Harrigan, Phyllis Kroll
Center: Miss Metrelis, Marcia Root
Right: Joanne Vogelsang, Betty Theobold, Antoinette DeLuca

Two teams from each of the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades were chosen to participate in the girls' volleyball intra-mural. A team composed of senior girls won the championship. At the South Huntington Playday, a West Islip honor team reached the semi-finals. Having won the first two games, the gals entertained high hopes. Unfortunately, they lost the third game to Babylon. Doris Petri was the unanimous choice for the most outstanding player.

Bowling

As of March 1, 1960 the Bowling Team was in first place, with three matches and a tournament remaining for March competition. Under Coach Mario Vitali's supervision, the team practices every Monday at the Captree Lanes. Led by Ray Bloomquist, the team members expect to continue their winning pace and go on to first place.

Golf

Led by George Stanton, the golf team had its finest season. Consistant fine playing by veteran Richy Briggs and freshman Bob Lehrfeld were responsible for winning the first ten matches. Dependable performances by Dick Berman and Richy Christianson contributed greatly to the team's success. In the County Tournament, the team placed third and George Stanton was runner up. With the loss of George Stanton by graduatation, a veteran team will take to the links this year.

Boys' Basketball

Standing L to R: Dane Sargent, Frank Riccuiti, Jerry Gillon,
Tom Kutkiewicz, Bill Raynor, John Horton, Coach Zawyrucha
Kneeling L to R: George Peppel, Don Gould, Pete Galietta,
Donald Woods, Geoffrey Matherson, Edmund Lehr

When the Lions lost their final game to Port Jefferson, an optimistic attitude, "Wait til next year", was evident. Throughout the season, the team fought hard to overcome handicaps. With the return of only one letterman and few players who had jayvee experience, Coaches Ward and Zawyrucha quickly had to develop the available talent. This green team played opponents strong with veterans who provided tough competition. The two wins over West Babylon and the victory over La Salle Military Academy did boost morale, but the Lions lacked the strength and height necessary for success.
Because all sports programs are initiated to teach players how to lose as well as how to win, the Lions profited philosophically when they learned that "Circumstances are the ruler of the weak; they are but the instruments of the wise".

Girls' Basketball

No.1-Antoinette DeLuca, No.6-Pat Clausey, No.8-Cecelia Harrigan, No.2-Gail Wagner, No.3-Joanne Vogelsang, No.7-Linda Wicks, No.4-Phyllis Kroll, No.5-Margaret Gottsch, No.9-Marcia Root (Team Captain)

After 3 p.m. each winter day, many girls were on board for basketball intramurals. Schedules were drawn up for weekly games and each class was represented by two teams. So high did enthusiasm run that the girls made blue and gold numbered pinnies as a surprise for the coaches. A blue and gold basketball was used for warm-ups.
An honor team, captained by Marcia Root, was selected for Playday at Northport. Unfortunately, we drew the championship team as our opponent. Score-wise, the game was disappointing but the team-work was spirited. Notable was the performance of Cecelia Harrigan, a very valuable guard, who won the Outstanding Player Award for West Islip.
