West Islip's Lions finished their varsity season with a better than expected 5-2-1 record. Chiefly through the efforts of Coaches Cesareo and Duart, the Lions completed their first winning season.

The Bayshore game set the pattern as we went into it heavy underdogs and came out with a 0-0 upset. Though our offense hadn't yet jelled, the defense more than made up for it with Todd Clist's outstanding punting. Our defense was to continue strong all season, and allowed only an average of five points a game while chalking up three shutouts.

In our second game with South Huntington we again went in underdogs and came out with our first victory 12-6, withRichard Lind and Bill Koehler doing the scoring.
In our first league game we beat Smithtown 19-6 with Lind scoring two of our three touchdowns.
On October 11, we lost our first game to West Babylon 13-0. In a hard fought game West Babylon, capitalizing on good breaks, managed to score twice in the second half.
In another non-league encounter, we beat previously undefeated East Islip 13-6 with Koehler and Tom Kutkiewicz doing the scoring.
On October 25, we lost the heartbreaker of the season 13-7 to Riverhead. The entire game was played in a driving rain forcing us to ground our passing game as Riverhead just managed to squeak out the victory. The Blue Waves then went on to an undefeated season and the league championship.
We were again underdogs at Sayville where we came up with our biggest upset of the season as we beat our opponent 6-0. Dick Lind was our whole offense carrying the ball every play in an eighty yard touchdown drive.
"Iron Man" Lind again starred against Patchogue as he scored three touchdowns and set up a fourth with a seventy yard run to lead us to a 24-0 victory.
This final victory gave us third place in the league with a 3-2 record. As a result of our newly won prestige, we were able to place three Lions on the all Star Team; Co-captains Alan Bohlert and John Vino were named at tackle, with Lind at fullback.

Wrestling

Middle Row L to R: Ronnie Chvatal, Steve Gabriel, Felix Rivera, Frank Whitehouse Tony Mellino, Robert Factora, Kenny Gilmore, Joe Pavon
Bottom Row L to R: Fred Salazar-Mgr., John Factora, Briant Notine, John Ferry, Richard Hardy, Tad Parvin, Harry Cannon, Joe Costa, Bill Bedell-Mgr.

Our Lionhearted wrestling team completed its most successful season with a total of 16 wins - 3 losses. The losses were sustained to the powerful Mepham team of Nassau, the County Champs, and to Bay Shore and Amityville, who finished first and second in Suffolk County.
There was a total of sixty-seven boys out for the Varsity and Jr. Varsity wrestling teams and thirty-three of these boys received Varsity awards. This large turn-out made for a well balanced and competitive team, which had much depth.
West Islip won the A-2 League Championship, by being undefeated in league competition, and also the A-2 League Wrestling Tournament held at West Islip. Thus, the acquisition of the school's first two trophies was accomplished. In the A-2 League Tournament, West Islip had SEVEN individual champions: John Ferry(107 lbs.), Tad Parvin(113 lbs.), Harry Cannon(119 lbs.), John Factora(125 lbs.), Briant Notine(131 lbs.), Richard Lind(161 lbs.), and Alan Bohlert(Heavyweight).

Bob Factora, Bob DeSano, Joe Costa and Lou Passanante all won second place medals.

Don Barichak, Fred Christoffer and Ken Bossung won fourth place awards.

In the Suffolk County Tournament, West Islip placed fourth as Alan Bohlert and Briant Notine fought to second place, while John Ferry captured third and Bob Factora fourth place. The season closed with the Long Island Tournament at which John Ferry took a third place medal and Briant Notine a fourth place award.
Louis Passanante was the only undefeated wrestler in dual meets, with a 7 win - 0 loss record. The other top Varsity wrestlers also had very impressive individual records.

Congratulations go to Coaches Duart and Holborow for an excellent coaching job, and also for establishing wrestling as one of the most popular sports at West Islip.

Baseball

The 1958 Varsity baseball team's overall record was seven wins and seven losses. In league competition we won four games and lost six.
In the first game against Patchogue, Brent Myott was the winning pitcher, while Andy Cuiffo and Warren Halverson were top hitters with two hits apiece, setting the score at West Islip 4 - Patchogue 0.
Sayville defeated the Lions in our second game when a no-hitter, shutout game was pitched. Tom O'Connor, although the losing pitcher, hurled a fine game.
The third game was a victory over Bay Shore with our winning pitcher, Tom O'Connor, giving up only one run. John Cody, Don Marquet, and Chuck Sargent had two hits apiece.
We suffered a second defeat when Babylon won by a no-hit shutout. Warren Halverson pitched a good game giving only one run on two hits.
In the fifth league game, the Lions once more went down in defeat. Patchogue was the victor, despite Andy Cuiffo's three hits, two of which were homeruns.
Warren Halverson surrendered only three hits, while striking out ten in a winning effort against West Babylon. Don Marquet, Andy Cuiffo and Warren Halverson each collected two hits in this sixth game.
In West Islip's second encounter with Bay Shore, the Marauders turned the tables on the Lions, defeating them by a seven to four score. Chuck Sargent contributed two hits.
The Lions lost to Babylon again in the eighth league game of the season. The final score was eleven to three.
In the ninth game with West Babylon we won 6-4. Winning pitcher, Tom O'connor, pitched a superb game. Warren Halverson hit a single and a double, and John Louriero scored twice.
Sayville won easily, 11-1, in the tenth and final game.
Team Captain Rudy Romano received the Sideliners' Sportsmanship Trophy. The Most Valuable Player award was presented to Warren Halverson. Andy Cuiffo was the team's top hitter with a .447 batting average.

Basketball

The Varsity team got off to a slow start winning only one of its first six games. However, when they finally began to perform as a team they played .500 ball for the remainder of the season. The starting lineup consisted of seniors Todd Clist, Andy Cuiffo, Warren Halverson, Richard Hamma and Al Snyder. Warren was the team's standout, leading the scoring in most games and finishing a successful season with 274 points, an average of 15.3 points per game. He was ably assisted in the scoring and setting up of
plays by Todd and Andy. Help in getting rebounds and strong in overall playing came by Richard and Al.

Pete Galietta, Jerry Gillon, John Horton, Tom Kutkiewicz, Bob Petto and John Loureiro completed the roster. While they didn't get too much opportunity to play this season, they exhibited promise and stamina for next year. The team showed tremendous drive and coordinated teamwork with no one individual responsible for its success.

The West Islip mermen were very much in the inter-scholastic swim during the 1959 season, and under the able tutelage of Mr. Charles Brown, had a very successful season.
In all meets and in the Long Island Championship, the West Islip team did an outstanding job. Captain Dave Bradley, Ray Campo, Ken Campo, Norman Horan, Bob Lehrfeld, Bert Schwartz, George Stanton, Pete Raynor, Tom More, andJay Pulver were some of our consistant point scorers.
The Lions will lose the services of lettermen Bill Craft, George Stanton and Jay Pulver because of graduation; however, Coach Brown is very optomistic about next season because his excellent squad of Varsity swimmers will be enhanced by a promising group of underclassmen from the undefeated Junior High Team.

Kneeling L to R: Ronald Chvatal, John Copeland, Ray Haning, Louis Passanante, John De Iorio, Robert Matherson, Michael Noto

This year's club, in spite of having suffered losses through last year's graduation, compiled a 6-6-3 record for the 1958 season. placing fourth in the A League with a 4-1-3 record. The spirited squad had the "stuff" to fill the gaps left by the graduating Varsity players. In the opening games, Coach Zawyrucha's booters piled up three successive wins, West Babylon 8-0, Smithtown 4-2, Northport 4-0, and one tie with Brentwood 4-4. Amityville put an end to this favorable streak with a 6-2 victory. However, the Lions came back quickly to upset Islip 6-0; Sayville and Copiague were other victims, but the South Huntington and Sachem teams proved too strong.
Coach Zawyrucha was especially satisfied with the fine performances turned in by the senior members whose adept playing encouraged new recruits. Tim Hille, the Lions' top scorer, and Fred Christoffer were named in the A1 League All Star Team and Warren Halverson was given honorable mention.

We know that Spring has arrived in West Islip when we see Coach Dwyer's boys circling the track. However, running is only one facet of track. A hurdle team composed of Dick Lewis, Tim Hille, Skip Price and John Factora captured second place in the county relay. In the two mile relay, Bob Millen, Al Snyder, Wayne Nilsen and Joe Costa made up our team which took sixth place. Alan Bohlert, our shot putter, went to the county finals and came in fourth.

Cross Country

Standing L to R: Fred Papa, John Ferry, Fran Balajadia, Al Snyder, Dick Lewis, John Factora, Ed Squires
Kneeling L to R: Wayne Nilsen, Barry Doscher, Roaul Hurwitz, Bob Millen, Vincent Mannino

While the Cross-Country record reads 1-3, we may confidently state that West Islip had a successful season. The twelve members on our team had to run their best to beat teams composed of 18 to 20 members. The meet with Bayport, which we lost by one point, could have been averted if we had had a larger team.
Bob Millen, West Islip's top runner, took first place in the A-2 Championship where Islip took fourth place. He also took fourth place in the County Finals and seventh place in the State Finals.

Golf

Led by Captain George Stanton and veterans Richy Briggs and Steve Post, the golf team had a highly successful season.
Losing only three matches, the team developed strongly toward the end of the season and placed third in the Suffolk County Championships. Increased interest in golf by a number of Suffolk County Schools has resulted in the formation of a golf league. With a team, this year, made up completely of players who have had Varsity experience, the season should prove to be the most successful in the history of the school.

Bowling

West Islip started its first bowling team in the last week of November, 1958. The keglers practiced at Captreeuntil the beginning of the Christmas Recess, when a Varsity team was chosen by Coach Vitali. Although only five men bowl in each game, six players were carried. These were: Joe Lisi, George McGarry, Bill Federer, Charlie Caraher, Jerry Renna and Ray Lanning.
The first match was bowled at Copisgue on January 7; Joe Lisi led the Lions to a 5-0 victory with a 195-533 series. In the second match, it was George McGarry who led the way to a 5-0 victory, rolling a 187-520 series against West Babylon. In this match the team rolled its two highest series, both 803. In the third match, the West Islip team beat Amityville 4-1. Joe Lisi was again high man with a 173-479 series. The fourth match was a 4-1 victory over North Babylon. Bill Federer led the team in this victory with a 1168-448 series. the fifth match was a 4-1 defeat handed to the Lion team by Babylon. Bill Federer led the team again with a 161-450 series. In the sixth match, a return with Copiague, the Lions again lost 4-1. Bill Federer led the team with a 160-459 series. The seventh match, a return match with West Babylon, saw the Lion team get back its old life and win the match 5-0. The eighth match was a 3-2 victory over Amityville which Joe Lisi led with a 177-489 series. The ninth match was lost to North Babylon 4-1; George mcGarry led our team with a 175-457 series. In the tenth match we defeated babylon 5-0 and bowled the high series of 878.
In the ten matches rolled by the Lions team, the keglers compiled 34 points out of a possible 50 to lead the Suffolk South Shore Bowling League.

Girls' Sports

Cheerleaders

"One. . .Two. . .Three. . .Four. . .Who are we for?. . . . .Yeah! West Islip High"--Sue Arink leads West Islip High School's Varsity cheerleaders at our sports meets. "We've got the pep. . . .we've got the steam"--when our lively cheerleaders excite the crowds at our pep rallies and all sports events. "We've got a good team and no one can be prouder"--they shout as their continued enthusiasm inspires school spirit and encourages our student body to root vigorously for the Lions. "Lions, Lions hear our cry". . . .this is the fourth year West Islip has had "spirit makers", who each year have expanded their activities and created new and different cheers to encourage our teams to "V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!"

Hockey remains the favorite sport of our back to school months. On the Tuesday and Thursday afternoons of the crisp fall days, we girls participated in field hockey intramurals. Each grade had its respective team; two of which were chosen to play Bay Shore and East Islip. On October 25, our honor team, composed of the above players, braved a rainstorm to compete in the Suffolk County Girls Athletic Association Hockey Playday at Heckscher State Park. Although we lost two games, we thoroughly enjoyed the stiff competition which we encountered.

Basketball

Basketball continues to be the vitalizing sport of the snowball weather, and this year it carried in its unfailing reputation by a turnout of fifty girls for intramurals. When two teams were selected, we played and beat West Babylon; Babylon trounced us, but we came back to defeat Brentwood. West Islip also played Nassau County teams in games at Westbury where we won one game and lost one. We won all three games against Brentwood, Northport and Bay Shore, and we tied Babylon for first place. However, in the championship game for the banner we lost to our neighboring rival, Babylon.

Apparatus

Volleyball Team

The V formed by our team members does not signify victory for game competition; however, it does denote vivaciousness and vitality. Approximately fifty zealous contestants, charged with exuberance, enthusiastically enjoyed this sport. Our teams defeated West Babylon and South Huntington. Unfortunalely, we did not follow through along this winning vein in the playday competition at South Huntington where we lost all three games. June Druian was chosen as our most valuable player for the 1958 season.

Swimming Girls

Top Row L to R: Susan knapp, Ceci Wilson, Grace Frank, Judy Horton,Sue Arink, Diane Kublin, Dottie Griebling, Barrie Lowell, Pat Pfenning, Judy Brown
Bottom Row L to R: Terry Moran, Patsy Siebel, Cassie McManus, Karen Kruger, Bettylu Galloway, Kathy Graham, Edith Noble, Antoinette DeLuca, Joanne Cassella, Pam Whitcomb, Marcey McManus

The mermaids opened their second victorious season by defeating Brentwood 68-45; the team next swam against Uniongale. This time, the girls were defeated 5-48 in a close and exciting meet. The second contest with Brentwood was won by West Islip, 65-48, putting both Uniondale and West Islip in a first place tie for the Triangular meet.
Paying host at this event, West Islip was able to retain the championship title. With the outcome of the meet resting on the final event, Sue Arink, Dottie Griebling and Barrie Lowell combined talents to win the 75 yard team medley. Other excellent performances were posted by Pat Pfenning, Diane Kublin, Cassie McManus and Edith Noble. Thus, the swimming team compiled its second championship in two years.

Softball

Softball is played by those gals who thoroughly enjoy kicking up the dust. When we had sufficiently limbered up, extensively practiced and adequately adjusted ourselves to the balmy breezes of Spring, we chose two teams. One team defeated Harborfields while the other team lost to East Islip. Early in June at Heckscher State Park we lost three games at the playday sponsored by the Suffolk County Girls' Athletic Association. Despite our defeat, we returned home with abundant jubilation because Judy McLaughlin had won the Most Valuable Player Award.
